As we delve into the future of design spaces that truly build equality, collaboration, and innovative areas, a must have book is Make Space: How to Set the Stage for Creative Collaboration. Authors Doorley and Witthoft have written a real “how-to” for developing new or reconfiguring old spaces from educational facilities to billion dollar business offices.
Developing a Design
The authors, Doorley and Witthott, outline a focus on designs that have a human centered approach that impact behavior and collaboration. The book was developed as a tool to help envision and create space for each unique culture and purpose it will serve.
Creating the Space
Doorley and Witthott looks at 5 different contents within its cover: Tools, Situations, Insights, Design Templates, and Space Studies. Its inception is based much on the 5 year experiment at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design known as d.school. As a reader, I loved that there is not a start or finish with this book; it is a how to. You seek what information you need, reference, read, think, and imagine how your space could be changed, transformed, or created. Everything from ideas and plans to materials, directions, and even manufacturers information are included. If you desire walls vs. open space, hanging panels, aesthetic changes, seating equalizers, and storage that is either protected or available, this is a must have resource.
We often think of our classroom as a home away from home for nine months. As a classroom teacher, you spend a good part of your day and life in a space that should feel more like a cozy room or relaxing abode rather than a dreary, impersonal, industrial work room. Through the use of this valuable resource, work to develop your own sense of well-being and collaborate with others to transform your space into quality, innovative “classrooms” for your learners!
